HOLIDAYS IN MAREMMA TUSCANY
By w311y: 29/12/11
A holiday in the Maremma in south Tuscany can be a perfect balance of nature, tradition, culture, spirituality and gastronomy. It can be an exciting meeting with the lush colours of nature all over its territory, from the Uccellina park to the natural oasis of the lagoon of Orbetello and the Burano lake, from the Argentario peninsula to the Castiglione della Pescaia sandy beaches. Perhaps you will be moved by the vitality of the traditions of its inhabitants, such as the Butteri, the last horseback herdsmen in Europe, who in the present today still look after their cattle from the saddles of their faithful steeds, or like the fishermen of the Orbetello lagoon, who still practice ancient fish preservation techniques learnt from the Spaniards in the times when Orbetello was the capital of the State of Royal garrisons of Spain in the sixteenth century.
If you wish you can pass some historical culture time, with a tour of the area’s medieval villages, such as Massa Marittima and its famous cathedral, or with a trip to the Gavorrano Mining Park, evidence of an economy from the past.
Your holiday to the Maremma Tuscany can still be full of the deep spirituality of Saint Galgano, an ancient medieval knight who plunged his sword into the rock at the exact spot where even today you can admire it, next to the famous Abbey which was built in his name. Uncompromising spirituality like the contemporary honesty of the Nomadelfia religious community, a group of about 50 families which want to promote a new civilization based on the Gospel, just like the first Christian communities.
Each encounter will always be seasoned by the wealth of Maremma gastronomy, so rich and tied to the products of this land.
In the Maremma it is not enough to just look around, you need to “live it”.
