The Rough Guide to… Bangkok
“Bangkok is excess in all of its unrestrained glory.”
“The city is insatiable, a monster that feeds on concrete, purchasing malls and diesel exhaust.”
“Enjoy the attempts at enlightenment at the city’s renowned temples and doorstep shrines, or straightforward acts of kindness amid the urban bustle.”
What’s the ESL job marketplace like?
Well there is very literally some thing for everyone! From the international schools which are hunting for qualified teachers appropriate down to the multitude of language schools who require tiny more than a simple TEFL certificate. There is lots of function in government schools and universities to be located also. Spend varies but teachers in government schools and language centres can expect to begin off on salaries of about 30,000 baht per month. Better qualifications will land much better jobs, far better salaries and better opportunities.
How about the nightlife?
I haven’t seen much of that however, though I went to a nice western styled pub with my new colleagues which had a good atmosphere. I’ve also had a couple of meals down in the Khao San area which has lots of foreign travellers to mingle with. Lots of bars and lots of restaurants catering to something you want genuinely. There are some excellent cinemas as nicely.
Accommodation?
Plenty to choose from. You can get quite standard apartment style rooms on the outskirts of the city for a couple of thousand baht a month. Central Bangkok sees the price tag shoot up. I’ve got a good studio near the MRT for ten,000 per month and that includes furniture, a swimming pool and fitness centre. There is a large alternative of property here to suit any spending budget.
Shopping and Food items?
Bangkok is a shopper’s paradise! There are huge malls in the centre of town to indulge in western luxury items. A wide range of Supermarkets: Tesco Lotus, Villa for western goods. Tops is excellent too. 7-11′s are totally all over the place so essential items are typically inside a couple of minutes walk.
Web, Cable Tv?
Genuine gives both my cable television and web. Packages from Accurate cover most of the major cable channels and depending on your enjoy of sports and movies will expense anywhere in between 750 and 2000 baht. I’m not too interested in television so the 750 baht silver package gives me some news and entertainment shows. World wide web is 600 baht from Genuine and has been rather good so far.
How are the locals?
So far so good! Most people smile and are quite helpful. The receptionist in my condo block helped me to get my cable television and net sorted out and people in the shops and manning stalls near my residence constantly smile. Their level of English is not quite great even though.
Transportation?
Transport truly isn’t a issue in Bangkok. The MRT and BTS can take you to most central locations rapidly, cheaply and comfortably in air-conditioned ease. If its just a short neighborhood hop, motorbike taxis appear to be on every single street corner and will weave in and out of targeted traffic to get your destination very rapidly – just be warned that this isn’t the safest mode of transport! Add to that a enormous quantity of private taxis and an substantial bus network as nicely as the river and khlong (canal) taxis.
What do you like about living there?
What’s not to like? There is a huge quantity to see and do in Bangkok. From large central malls to open air markets and vendors on every single street corner and your eyes need to by no means be tired. There are wonderful temples hidden away along out of the way sois as properly as all the principal attractions like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Everbody will have different things they like, there is just so considerably! It is genuinely an international city that buzzes 24 hours per day.
And what are the downsides?
Its unbelievably busy, noisy, pollution from site visitors fumes can be very poor in the central regions. Traffic can be held up for what seems like hours at a time. If you’re a countryside person, this most likely isn’t the location for you.
Local attractions?
Tons and tons of issues to see and do. Bars restaurants, street-life, The Grand Palace, the peace of Lumpini Park, the bustle of Chatuchak weekend industry, the backpackers ghetto on Khao San Road or just whizzing along the Chao Phraya River taking in the sights. Far too a lot of to sum up in a sound-bite.
Are there several foreigners to meet up with?
A lot! From teachers to tourists to multinational organization expats, You won’t go far without having seeing a foreign face!
