Have you ever realized the fun of playing with simple things in life? The mirth of playing in the sand at the beach with your childhood friend is something you will cherish forever in your life. What fun it was to build sand castles and play King and Queen and before you finished enjoying your palace, the sea claimed it as hers! This was a favorite pass time of many a person in the past.

There are sand sculpturing competitions that are held every year in which people make some of the most elaborate sand castles and sculptures known to man. This is a great activity to do and has a rich history of people who have wanted to create some of the best sand sculptures in history.

FIESA is a mega exhibition of sand sculptures held by Prosandart since 2003 in Pera, Algarve, that in each new edition is dedicated to a different theme. Every year, a group of talented sculptors, from various parts of the world and experts in the art of sand sculpting, join to give shape to thirty-five thousand tons of sand, in an area of fifteen thousand square meters. This year, it’s FIESA 2011 – and it’s the ninth time that the Algarve will have seen the exhibit that’s become famous the world over.

The theme for 2011 was the Animal Kingdom, and everyone had so much fun making sculptures that resembled their favorite animal. Animals from adult and children’s fiction alike were celebrated, and the concern is for the preservation of species going extinct right now. Scenes were made in the sand of animals in danger of dying out, living in their habitat naturally. A very poignant look into what the human species really think of the animals we inhabit the planet with. The festival will open April 15 and be available until June 15th for people to watch how the sculptures are built.

Algarve is a beautiful place in Portugal that is close to the Faro district and city of Faro. This is a very popular tourist attraction in Portugal and one of the most popular places to visit in all of Europe. Being that it is also the 3rd richest place to be in Portugal. You can imagine how many people love to spend their quality time looking at sand castles in a gorgeous area like this.

Algarve comes alive every year this festival happens, so make sure to put this on your bucket list of things to witness before it’s too late.
